Study at Oatridge College
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ)
SVQ Courses are available at Oatridge from Level 1 (Preparation for Racing) to Level 3 (Mixed Farming, Amenity Horticulture - Sportsturf, Landscaping & Horticulture and Landbased Service Engineering - Agricultural & Horticultural Machinery). They are vocational qualifications which require a high level of practical expertise and can usually be undertaken on a part-time basis, or as a workbased programme.
Suitable candidates may also undertake a Lantra Modern Apprenticeship alongside their Level 3 course. This usually entails the training & successful completion of an additional 2 industry specific tests (eg FEPA, Forklift). Candidates must also successfully complete their Level 3 course. Certificate Courses
Certificate Courses involve one year of full-time study and are usually made up of a variety of National Certificate Units at Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 level. There may also be an opportunity to undertake a Scottish Vocational Qualification as part of the Certificate course.
The emphasis in Certificate courses is on developing practical skills in the chosen vocational area. The normal entry requirement is a demonstration of numeracy and communication skills, with some experience of the vocational area.
Progression to Higher National Certificate is usually possible.
Higher National Certificate Courses
Higher National Certificate (HNC) courses involve one year of full-time, or in some cases two years of part-time study and are made up of Higher National Units.
The courses are designed to include some practical work in addition to technical study. The normal entry requirement* for a full-time HNC is 1 Higher at C or above or the successful completion of a relevant College Certificate programme. The achievement of an SVQ Level 3 will also be considered.
Progression to the second year of an HND programme is usually possible.
Higher National Diploma Courses
Higher National Diploma (HND) courses mostly involve two years of full-time study and are made up of Higher National Units. The courses are designed for those who wish to obtain technical qualifications for their chosen vocational area. The normal entry requirement* for HND is 2 Highers at C or above, or the successful completion of the appropriate HNC programme.
Certificates of Competence
Specialist training courses are delivered to support the achievement of Certificates of Competence validated by Lantra and the National Proficiency Test Council. Courses include the Safe Use of Pesticides, Chainsaws and Forklifts.
