In today's agricultural environment it is of vital importance that tomorrow's farmers and their staff have the training to face the future.
Oatridge has a reputation for producing Agriculture students with a balance of knowledge, practical skills and technical ability.
The main base for teaching is the 300-hectare farm, which has a range of commercial enterprises ranging from intensive livestock to arable production. It is used as a resource for practical tuition and a source of up-to-date physical, financial and technical data.
Full-time students all work on the college farm whilst part-timers gain work experience on their placement farms. Students carry out livestock and crop work, tractor operations, estate tasks and machinery maintenance.
The practical work is supported in the classroom and workshops by livestock, crops and machinery lectures. Higher level courses also study: Record-keeping, IT, Personnel Management, Marketing, Planning, Budgeting and Business Appraisal.
The college staff have links with industry that provide students with experience of specialist modern businesses, including allied agricultural industries.
Short courses are also available to provide specialist training and certification in the skills required for modern agricultural businesses, e.g. FEPA Spraying, Forklift Driving, Sheep Dipping and Veterinary Medicines.
Students can progress from SVQ and Certificate level courses to HNC and HND. For those completing HND there is the opportunity to progress to degree courses at other institutions
