HND in Animal Care
A 2 year full time programme (3 days per week). Year 1 follows the HNC programme but with additional units which must be achieved.
The course is designed to prepare participants for employment at supervisory and management level jobs related to the animal care industry. It also gives individuals the knowledge necessary to run a small animal related business of their own.
This is a theory-based course with a small practical element. A high level of commitment is expected and required of students in order to successfully achieve all areas of this course. The course consists of 13 units in Year 1 and 13 units in year 2
Year 1 follows HNC units and HND year 2 covers:
Unit No DC57 04 - Animal Care Facility Management
Provides knowledge on the day-to-day running of an animal care facility, including specific requirements, husbandry and welfare.
Unit No D4Y4 04 - Microbiology: an introduction
This unit allows students to develop a basic understanding of the classification, identification, growth and role of micro-organisms in causing disease.
Unit No A6T1 34 - Workplace Experience
This unit allows students to plan, undertake and evaluate a work placement.
Unit No A619 04 - Customer Care
This unit allows students to develop a customer care strategy for an organisation, explaining the methods employed to establish and maintain relationships with customers.
Unit No A6HG 04 - Managing a Small Business
This unit allows students to achieve the knowledge and skills required in maintaining the various administrative and management systems required in a small business.
Unit No D2GW 04 - Financial Accounts and Records for Small Businesses
This unit allows students to achieve the knowledge in recording and using financial systems and statutory records within a small business.
Unit No A4S9 04 - Employment and Health & Safety Legislation for Landbased Industries
This unit allows students to develop the skills and knowledge required to apply the principles of employment and health and safety legislation in the workplace.
Unit No DC4M 04 - Animal Nursing: Drugs and Medicines
Provides knowledge on basic pharmacokinetics of drugs, commonly used medicines, calculation and administration of medicines and relevant legislation.
Unit No DC4Y 04 - Animal Nursing: Theatre Practice
Provides knowledge on procedures carried out in the operating theatre (including sterilisation and scrub up procedures), principles and practice of anaesthesia, monitoring and pre, inta and post anaesthesia care of animals.
Unit No DC4R 04 - Specialist Animal Care: Avian
Provides knowledge on the identification, specialist care requirements, anatomy and physiology and legislation relating to birds commonly kept in the UK.
Unit No DC4X 04 - Specialist Animal Care: Wildlife Rehabilitation
Provides knowledge on the identification, specialist care requirements and rehabilitation of wildlife in the UK.
Unit No DC58 04 - Specialist Animal Care: Animal Collections
Provides specialist knowledge on the care requirements, suitable species, accommodation, welfare and relevant legislation of species kept in animal collections.
Unit No DC4V 04 - Dog Training
This unit allows students to develop the knowledge of how dogs learn and how this is applied to their training. Students will also develop an understanding of the requirements of dogs for specialist functions.
Entry requirements
Essential
For progressing students - it is essential to have passed the HNC level of the course
For new students - 5 Standard Grades at grade 3 or above to include English, Maths, Biology or another science subject
- 2 Higher Grades at C or above in English, Maths, Biology or another science subject
- Candidates must have at least 2 weeks formal work experience within the animal industry. A letter must be produced from your employer confirming your employment.
Progression
Progression to 2nd or 3rd year of Degree courses may be possible on completion of the two year HND programme.
Additional information
Compulsory 2 weeks work experience be undertaken in any animal related business and provides students with an insight into working in a particular environment. This is completed in year 1 of the HND programme.
