Courses

Countryside management and conservation have grown in importance in recent years, as we have come to understand the pressures that we, the human race, are putting on the world around us.

Tackling the problems and finding sustainable solutions require a high level of technical knowledge and practical skills and Oatridge College has risen to the challenge with a range of courses, each of which includes practical work in partnership with BTCV Scotland, the largest of the conservation voluntary organisations.

Careers are to be found in conservation organisations, estate management, environmental contracting, local authorities, government agencies, the education sector, countryside management and visitor centre management, but the competition for jobs is intense and many people gain experience through voluntary work before securing employment.

Rum Study Trip

Oatridge College has a wide range of habitats and environments on which to base its teaching and training.  Dominated by the volcanic outcrop of Binny Craig, acres of mixed plantation and mature woodland give way to water courses, wetlands and unimproved grassland.

The College is also well placed for field study trips to seashore, river, upland, moor and bog habitats and over the years has built strong links with local land managers and conservation and wildlife organisations, offering students the chance to study real life projects and issues. Students on most programmes have the opportunity of a study tour .

Progressing further

Students gaining the Certificate in Environmental and Countryside Practices may progress to the HNC course in Countryside Management. Successful completion of the HNC leads on to an HND course in Countryside Management. Many students progress from Oatridge to study to Degree level at Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Auchincruive
