C&G 7485-01 Level 2 Certificate in Forgework

Overview:

This qualification has been developed with the Farriery Training Agency (FTA) as a compulsory pre-requisite for entry onto the Farriery Apprenticeship. It delivers the foundation skills required for recognising basic blacksmith's tools, understanding how the forge hearth works, and introducing the practical blacksmithing skills of forging, forming, cutting and joining. This is achieved by the candidate producing a series of easily repeatable exercises enabling the learner to develop their skills through practice.

What's involved?:

  • Unit 1: The operation, basic maintenance and control of forge hearths. The identification and operation of solid fuel forge hearths and gas furnaces. Safe working practices when operating solid fuel forge hearths and mobile gas furnaces. Please note: the practical exam will take place on a solid fuel forge hearth
  • Unit 2: Practical forgework. Use the following techniques appropriately and safely. Basic forging, basic forming, basic cutting,  basic joining. Produce a portfolio of forging exercises .
  • Unit 3: Using and Maintaining Blacksmith's Tools. The identification and use of a range of blacksmith tools

Duration:

This is a short full-time course of 12 weeks.

  • 05/09/2011 to 02/12/2011 (Examination 2nd December)
  • 09/01/2012 to 30/03/2012 (Examination 30 March)
  • 16/04/2012 to 06/07/2012 ( final date to be confirmed) 

Career opportunities:

Farrier Apprenticeship, Trainee Blacksmith.

Entry requirements:

3-Standard Grades which should include English & Maths. Enthusiastic, hard worker prepared to get involved in all aspects of the course both practical and classroom based.
Applicants who are using the course to move into an apprenticeship require to meet the criteria specified by the Farriery Training Agency.

Further education:

Candidates who have secured an apprenticeship can progress onto a 4 year Advanced Apprenticeship in Farriery.

Bursary:

Applicants meeting the necessary criteria may be eligible for a bursary.
