NC in Greenkeeping

The certificate course lasts for 1 year and is designed for candidates wishing to gain entry into the greenkeeping and sportsturf management industry.  


The course consists of 20 units and covers:

The technical and practical knowledge/skills required to construct a bunker.

E9A4 11: Golf Course Construction Green & Tees
The technical and practical knowledge/skills required to construct a golf green or tee.

E9E7 11: Golf Course Design and Layout
How to plan, design and layout golf holes.

E9E4 12: Turf Maintenance
How to look after, repair and renovate turf grass.

E9E5 12: Turf Production
How to produce grass swards from seed and turf.

E9KJ N2: Introduction to Pesticide Application
How to prepare, calibrate and use a sprayer to apply chemicals.

D70M 13 : Maintenance of Sportsturf: Golf Introduction
Assist with the maintenance and repair of a golf course.

E9FP 10: Drainage 1: Introduction
Technical and practical knowledge required to understand field drainage.

E9F5 11: Personal and Social Development
Accident and Emergency procedures
Initial first aid and dealing with emergency/accident situations.

E8K6 04: Small Engine Powered Machine Operations
Basic maintenance and operation of small engine powered machines.

D9OO 10: Tractor Operation 1
Basic maintenance and operation of a tractor.

D9O3 10: Tree and Shrub Planting
How to plant and look after trees and shrubs.

DOND 11: Fertilisers: Quality & Application
Basic technical and practical knowledge of skills on the application of fertilisers.

DOID 10: Information Technology
Basic computer skills

D878 10: Plant Husbandry: Common Disorders
How to recognise and control turf pest, weeds and diseases.

D70L 11: Turfgrass: Introduction
Basic knowledge about grasses and how they grow

DONC 12: Soils: Formation and Cropping Potential
How soils are formed and classified in textural and structural types.

DOPT 11: Golf Club Procedures, Etiquette and Rules
The rules, etiquette and organisation of golf.

DOIB 10: Communication
How to communicate

E8TD 11: Use of Handtools in Greenkeeping
Basic knowledge of handtools and implements used for greenkeeping.

Entry requirements

Essential
- Core Skills at Intermediate 1 or 2.  This requirement can be tested at interview.
- 3 Standard Grades which should include English and Maths.
- Enthusiastic, hard worker prepared to get involved in all aspects of the course both practical and classroom based.

Progression

HNC in GC Management or SVQ3 Sportsturf Management.
