Sense and sensibility

23 January 2012

Around 170 National Certificate students, who make up the bulk of the College's youngest students, have attended an event to pick up pointers from the police on how to keep themselves safe and show consideration for other people.

Safety smallOrganised under Oatridge's "Wellbeing" programme, the students saw presentations from experts from the Lothian and Borders force covering hate crimes and racism, road safety and driving sensibly, and how to stay out of trouble when they are out in the community.

NC students are predominately the College's youngest and are thought to be the most likely to take risks, whether it's when they are driving or simply when they are out for the night. The police presentations were supported by a selection of videos which helped to drive home a number of important messages, ranging from ways to avoid confrontation to how members of the public tend to react when they hear students roaring down the street in their cars!

It's hoped to organise another session when the NC students will get advice on drugs and alcohol and sexual health, from locally-based counsellors.
